In simple words, it means that any substance, which can produce symptoms in a healthy person, can cure similar symptoms in a person who is sick. This idea is referred to as the “Law of Similars“, and was understood by Aristotle and Hippocrates and mentioned in ancient Hindu manuscripts. It was Hahnemann, however, who turned it into a science of healing.
Here is an examples of this principle:
a. An onion is a substance which makes your eyes water and your nose burn. If you are having an attack of hay fever with watering eyes and a burning nose, a homeopathic remedy made from onion can relieve it.
b. Poison ivy causes redness, intense itching, burning, blistering and sometimes stiff muscles. Homeopathically it has been used for everything from herpes and burns to eczema and arthritis.
A second principle of homeopathy is that you should give the least amount of medicine necessary to evoke a healing response. This is called the “Minimum Dose”. We all know that normal medicines can cause side effects, leading to much suffering or even death. In an effort to prevent side effects, Hahnemann began successive dilution with agitation of his medicines, to find the point at which they would be therapeutic, but not toxic.”

Homeopathic medicines are not habit-forming.
Homeopathic medicines do not produce unwanted side-effects.
They are safe in that only minute doses of medicine are prescribed, but due to the process of potentisation, or dilution and vigorous shaking during production, the potential therapeutic value of the plant, mineral or animal matter is released.
Although it is a minute dose, and, in the higher potencies, no original matter is to be found, its power is sufficient to displace the sickness and allow the patient to attain genuine, lasting cure.
Currently there are three thousand substances used as homeopathic remedies to treat everything from colds and cough to arthritis and cancer.

Homeopathy: history of Homeopathy in Australia
Homeopathy has been formally practiced in Australia since 1840. Dr. Stephen Simpson was the first trained homeopath. He arrived in Sydney in 1840 and moved to Brisbane after 6 months. He was followed by Dr. William Sherman who was born in Australia, studied in England and returned to Australia to commence practice in 1842.
Free homeopathic dispensaries were established in Victoria, Adelaide, and Sydney during the Gold Rush years and the Melbourne Homeopathic Hospital was established in 1876. This was followed by homeopathic hospitals in Hobart in 1899, Launceston 1900 and Sydney in 1902. Dr. Allan Campbell, a homeopath was the leading figure in setting up the Adelaide Children's Hospital ( 3 of the 6 doctors were homeopaths). These hospitals operated for over 60 years with their demise being due to a number of factors including the discovery of anti biotics, increasing opposition from the orthodox medical establishment and difficulties in obtaining trained homeopaths.
Over the past 50 years there has been a world-wide change in people's attitudes to health and a revival of homeopathy in Australia.

Homeopathy: history and definition.
Homeopathy, developed some 200 years ago as a direct reaction against harmful medical practices, is perhaps the original “alternative medicine.”
It was developed in the late eighteenth century by Samuel Christian Hahnemann, (1755 – 1843), a German physician, chemist and prolific translator of ancient medical works. Homoeopathy is based on the law that “like cures like”, a law recognised and noted by various ancient authorities including Hippocrates.
Hahnemann initially re-discovered this law, and then confirmed it over decades of painstaking experimentation and detailed recording.
He established the fact, once and for all, that medicinal substances, when administered to healthy people, could produce “symptoms” similar to those experienced by sick people. He also found that illnesses could be cured by using minute, specially prepared doses of these substances, if prescribed on the basis of similarity of symptoms where the symptoms of the presenting sick person were similar enough to the effects or “symptoms” produced by the medicinal substance when given to healthy people.
In the health sciences, there is a growing movement toward a holistic view of the human organism, in which mind and emotions are recognised as playing a role with material or physical influences in the cause and cure of disease.
Therefore, homeopathy has always viewed any illness as a disease of the whole person.
In the last 200 years the tremendous healing power of homeopathy has been clearly established and is acknowledged by many countries. Homeopathy is used worldwide, and is rapidly gaining popularity owing to its deep and lasting effectiveness.
